Circle Casting

One of the first ritualistic spells many practitioners do is casting a circle. While not all practitioners do this for every ritual or spell, many do incorporate into their practices. Whether you choose to include circle casting in your practice is entirely up to you.

What is circle casting?

Casting a circle is a ritualist spell practice that creates a temporary and sacred boundary around yourself, often done before other rituals or spellwork. It acts as an energetic greenhouse, holding power within it and keeping outside influences out.

Circles act as protective shields, blocking out negative energy by creating a energetic wall between your work and harmful or stray energies, as well as general distractions that might pull energy away. It serves as a safe space where you can open yourself without feeling completely vulnerable.

Circles can also act as an energy portal, holding the energy raised during rituals and spell casting, so it doesn't dissipate early or wander off. After the ritual or spellwork is complete, a circle can be opened to release the energy outward and begin manifestation.

Circles enhance focus. The practice of casting and stepping into a circle helps to signal your subconscious mind that you are leaving the routine of daily life, and entering into a space to focus purely on your magic. This essentially creates a "between worlds" space, acting as a transitional space between physical world, and spiritual world where witchcraft work resides.

How to cast a circle

Prep + Cleanse - clean the area by tidying the physical space, sweeping, dusting, and so on. Cleanse the area with any chosen cleansing practice, such as using incense, chimes, or salt water. This helps remove old, stagnant, and heavy energy. Next, ground yourself. Still your body, close your eyes, focusing on deep breaths and feeling your own inner energy calming.

Begin the Circle - if you choose to use a tool to help direct energy, use it, otherwise you can simply use your finger. Guide your tool clockwise, usually starting in the East (the direction of Air and New Beginnings) but you can start wherever feels right. Guide your tool around the entirety of the desired workspace. As you move, visualize or feel bright glowing light or bright energy coming from your tool (or finger), forming a protective boundary around you. If you have desired protective phrase to use, now is the time to say it. A simple "let no harm enter this space" will work, but you can say whatever you'd like, or even nothing at all.

Calling + Closing - now you may choose to invite in the elements by facing each cardinal direction and inviting the corresponding elemental energy into your circle (East for Air, South for Fire, West for Water, North for Earth). This is sometimes referred to as "calling the quarters." If you are working with specific deities, ancestors, or spirits, now is also the time to invite them into your circle to work with you. Once you have called to all energies you wish to invite, take a moment to meditate and visualize or feel the circle's protective barrier closing around you and your space. Your circle is now closed and you are ready to perform whatever spellwork, ritual, or meditation you've intended.

Releasing the Circle

Gratitude + Release - once your ritual, spell, or meditation is complete, it is time to open the circle. Opening the circle will return energies to normal and release intention and manifestations. To do this, start by thanking and dismissing the energies you invited into your circle. In the opposite direction you started, thank any deities, ancestors, or spirits that worked with you. Then thank and release each elemental energy (North, West, South, East) a simple "thank you for your presence, hail and farewell" will work, or whatever words of gratitude feel right.

Lift the Barrier - next, take down the energy barrier. Retrace the circle with your tool (or finger), moving counterclockwise this time. Visualize or feel the light and bright energy return to your tool (or finger), or dissolve harmlessly. Now is the time to state the end of your work. A simple "the circle is open, yet unbroken" will work. Some practitioners like to include a farewell phrase like "so mote it be" or "merry meet, merry part, merry meet again." Remember that you can state what feel right, or nothing at all if you prefer to focus on the lifting of energy. The circle has now been released.

Grounding - it is important to tune into yourself, and ensure that you have the aftercare you need. It is not uncommon to feel tired or drained after spellwork. Touch grass, get a snack, hydrate. You may feel lingering energies are attached to you, and grounding yourself with physical nature will help absorb excess energy off of you. Remember you just transitioned back into the physical realm, that's a big deal. Make sure you're ok too.

As always, this is just a suggestion on how to cast circles. You may find something different that works better for you. Make adjustments where you need to. Circles can be cast for many different reasons, including for meditation or spiritual studies - but casting circles is not a requirement in witchcraft. Your practice is your own, so experiment, explore, and find what works.
